Clearing Jams

If a paper jam occurs, an alarm beep sound is generated and a paper jam location is indicated on the screen. Press to display simple solutions. If it is difficult to understand the procedures on the display, see the following sections to clear jams. If a paper jam occurs in multiple locations at the same time, check all messages that are displayed. Carefully read the precautions in Important Safety Instructions before you start clearing paper jams.

When removing the jammed paper, do not turn OFF the machine
Turning OFF the machine deletes the data that is being printed.
If paper tears
Remove all the paper fragments to prevent them from becoming jammed.
If paper jams repeatedly
Tap the paper stack on a flat surface to even the edges of the paper before loading it into the machine.
Check that the paper is appropriate for the machine. Paper
Check that no jammed paper fragments remain in the machine.
If a paper jam occurs during printing on the back side of the paper that is already printed (manual 2-sided printing), select the [Print on the Other Side] check box in the [Paper Source] tab of the printer driver.
Do not forcibly remove the jammed paper from the machine
Forcibly removing the paper may damage parts. If you are not able to remove the paper,contact your local authorized Canon dealer or the Canon help line. When a Problem Cannot Be Solved

Paper Jams in the Multi-Purpose Tray

If there is paper loaded in the tray, remove it first. If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not forcibly pull it out, but follow the procedure for a different paper jam location indicated by the message.

Gently pull out the paper.

Open and close the top cover.
When the top cover is opened and closed, the paper jam message disappears.

Open the top cover.
Hold the handle on the left side, and open the top cover.

Close the top cover.
When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the top cover is securely closed.

Paper Jams in the Paper Drawer or the Optional Paper Deck

If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not forcibly pull it out, but follow the procedure for a different paper jam location indicated by the message.

Paper Jams in the Paper Drawer

Pull out the paper drawer until it stops, and remove it while lifting the front side.

Gently pull out the paper.
When the optional paper feeder(drawer 2) is attached, gently pull out the paper in the same way.

Set the paper drawer.

Open and close the top cover.
When the top cover is opened and closed, the paper jam message disappears.

Open the top cover.
Hold the handle on the left side, and open the top cover.

Close the top cover.
When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the top cover is securely closed.

Paper Jams in the Optional Paper Deck

Press the button to open the door.

Gently pull out the paper.

Close the door.

Open and close the top cover.
When the top cover is opened and closed, the paper jam message disappears.

Hold the handle on the left side, and open the top cover.

When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the top cover is securely closed.

Paper Jams in the Duplex Unit

Do not forcibly remove jammed paper from the machine. If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, proceed to the next step.

Check whether paper is jammed inside the rear cover.

Open the rear cover.

Gently pull out the paper.

Close the rear cover.

Remove the jammed paper in the duplex unit.

Pull out the duplex unit
Hold the handles on the left and right sides, and pull out the duplex unit.

Gently pull out the paper.

Gently pull out the jammed paper from the duplex unit.

Replace the duplex unit back in place.

Remove the jammed paper inside the top cover.

Open the top cover.
Hold the handle on the left side, and open the top cover.
When the optional envelope feeder is installed

Remove the toner cartridge.
When the envelope feeder had been installed, skip to step 5.

Open the cover of the multi-purpose tray.
Hold the left and right side handles, and open the cover.

Remove the envelope feeder cover.

Hold the front side green knob and lift the transport guide.
Keep holding the transport guide until returning it to the original position in step 7.

Gently pull out the paper.
Pull out the paper flatly as much as possible to prevent unfixed toner from being dropped.

Gently return the transport guide back in place.
When the envelope feeder had been installed, skip to step 10.

Replace the envelope feeder cover back in place.

Close the cover of the multi-purpose tray.

Install the toner cartridge.
Make sure to push in the cartridge until it stops.

Close the top cover.

Paper Jams in the Back Side

Gently pull out the paper.

Close the rear cover.

Open and close the top cover.

When the envelope feeder had been installed, skip to step 4.

Hold the left and right side handles, and open the cover.

Hold the back side green knob and lift the transport guide.
Keep holding the transport guide until returning it to the original position in step 6.

Gently pull out the paper.
Pull out the paper flatly as much as possible to prevent unfixed toner from being dropped.

Gently return the transport guide back in place.
When the envelope feeder had been installed, skip to step 8.

Hold the handle of the envelope feeder cover, and remove the cover.

Hold the front side green knob and lift the transport guide.

Gently pull out the paper.
Pull out the paper flatly as much as possible to prevent unfixed toner from being dropped.

Gently return the transport guide back in place.
When the envelope feeder had been installed, skip to step 13.

Replace the envelope feeder cover back in place.

Close the cover of the multi-purpose tray.

Install the toner cartridge.

Paper Jams in the Optional Envelope Feeder

When paper is loaded in the envelope feeder, first remove the loaded paper before starting the following procedure. If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not forcibly remove it from the machine, but follow the procedure for another location indicated by the message.

Close the envelope feeder cover.

Remove the envelope feeder.

Gently pull out the jammed paper from the envelope feeder.

Open the top cover.
Hold the handle on the left side, and open the top cover.

Gently pull out the paper.

Replace the envelope feeder back in place.

Close the top cover.
When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the top cover is securely closed.
