Preparing Media

Check the state of the media that will be printed on, and prepare it for printing.
1
Prepare the media for printing.
2
Check/measure the media curl.
1
Take out one sheet of media, then place it on a flat surface with the print side facing up.
If media with the print side facing up is curling upward, the curl direction is up.
2
Turn the media over, then place it on a flat surface.
If media with the print side facing down is curling upward, the curl direction is down.
3
Measure the media curl.
Place the media on a flat surface so that it is curling upward, then use a ruler to measure the curl in the four corners.
4
Check whether the measured curl is within the following range.
If it is not, proceed to step 3.
If it is, preparations are complete. Load the media.Loading Media
Paper Weight
Curl direction up
Curl direction down
50 to 150 g/m2 (13.3 to 39.9 lb bond)
Up to 5 mm (0.2")
Up to 0 mm (0")
151 to 450 g/m2 (55.8 to 166.4 lb cover)
Up to 3 mm (0.12")
3
If the curl exceeds the proper range, decurl the media.
* If the curl is within the proper range, load the media.Loading Media
The maximum height of the media stack that can be decurled at once is 20 mm (0.79"). The approximate number of sheets this equates to is indicated below.
130 g/m2 (34.6 lb bond): 100 sheets
200 g/m2 (74 lb cover): 75 sheets
350 g/m2 (129.4. lb cover): 50 sheets
The stiffness of media varies depending on the direction of the media grain (the fibers which make up the media). Ensure that the media is not folded when you bend it for decurling.
1
Decurl the entire surface of the media.
For media 151 g/m2 (55.8 lb cover) or heavier
While pressing the media with one hand, lift up the entire stack of media.
For media 150 g/m2 (39.9 lb bond) or lighter
Place the entire stack of media on a flat surface, then bend the media using both hands.
2
Decurl one end of the media.
Bend the end of the media to decurl using both hands.
3
Decurl the other end of the media in step 2.
Bend the end of the media to decurl using both hands.
