Preface

Electronic signatures for signed PDF documents will be invalid when the documents are added to the binder document. However, the PDF document without any signature is not considered as the signed PDF document.
You cannot open two instances of a single binder document in a library concurrently.
When you finish editing a binder document that you have checked out from a Document Server Library or SharePoint Server Library, operations in accordance with the system settings must be performed.
If you have not selected the [Check in automatically after exiting the application that is editing documents] check box in the [System Settings] dialog box, you need to manually check in and check out documents.
When you edit a document in a SharePoint Server Library or Document Server Library for which [Create Version] is enabled, the [Enter Version Comments] dialog box is displayed. However, in the following cases, no operation is necessary because check in is performed without displaying the [Enter Version Comments] dialog box.
When a SharePoint Server Library document has been checked in
When the [System Settings] > [Browser] > [Shared Document Management] > [Enter version comments when checking in documents] check box is not selected
When the [Do not show this dialog box again when checking in documents] check box is selected in the [Enter Version Comments] dialog box
When [Use a custom paper size] is selected in [System Settings] and the device does not support custom paper sizes, the size closest to the original size is selected from those displayed in the Print Settings Pane > the [Print Settings] tab > [Output Size].
[Settings] > [System Settings] > [Common Settings] > [Print/Fax] > [Auto Select Paper] > [Select Paper Size] > [Use a custom paper size]
When [Use a paper size similar to the original size] is selected in [System Settings] and the device does not support the selected paper sizes, the size closest to the original size is selected from those displayed in the Print Settings Pane > the [Print Settings] tab > [Output Size].
[Settings] > [System Settings] > [Common Settings] > [Print/Fax] > [Auto Select Paper] > [Select Paper Size] > [Use a paper size similar to the original size]

Creating Binder Documents

When printing multiple documents including one created with an application of the type that the job is divided for printing, if you attempt to drag and drop the documents onto Document Binder, the second and subsequent documents may not be imported. When this happens, use Desktop Document Writer to create a binder document, and all documents will be imported into Document Binder. However, note that a separate binder document is created for each document.

Editing Documents with Document Binder

In the following cases, the [Register Document] dialog box is displayed.
When [Require Check Out] is set in the Document Server Library
When exported to the [SharePoint Server Library]
However, in the following cases, no operation is necessary because check in is performed without displaying the Register Document dialog box.
When the [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Browser] > [Shared Document Management] > [Display confirmation message when checking in documents] check box is not selected
When the [Do not show this confirmation message again when checking in documents] check box is selected in the [Register Document] dialog box
When one of the following is selected, you cannot select [Print] (when printing) in [Print Pages], or [Print Pages] in [Export Range] (when exporting as a PDF).
When [Booklet Printing] is selected in [Print Style]
When [Sheet for Insertion] is selected in [Print Style]
When [Each Chapter] is selected in [Staple] in [Print Style]
When the [Chapter Settings] > [Page Settings] tab > [Header/Footer Settings] > [Do not insert headers/footers into print pages] > [Do not count pages] is selected, or [Do not insert headers/footers into original pages] > [Do not count pages] is selected, that chapter's print page or original page number is not counted and the page numbers are not displayed.
The following binder documents are supported.
Page numbers: 1,000 pages
Chapter numbers: 1,000 chapters (if each chapter is only 1 page)
Record numbers: 5,000
File size: 2GB.
Selecting a PDF package adds only a cover page to a binder document.
When inconvertible documents are included in the selected documents, documents which cannot be converted and an error message are displayed.
You cannot select the following sheets or areas as pages: inserted sheets (including cover and tab sheets) and a blank side of a page/blank area generated through the settings of [Print Next Chapter]. However, you can do this when printing an original on the inserted sheets.
You cannot add iW documents and binder documents that are currently in use in another application.
When you select a PDF file that includes attached files, all the data except for the attached files are added to a binder document. Note, however, that the whole PDF file is stored as original document data in the binder document.

Reducing Margins with Document Binder to Save Paper

Annotations and digital stamps added with Annotation Editor are displayed on the original position.

Printing from the Document Binder Screen

When the Canon printer that is selected in [Printer Name] does not support switching between 1-sided and 2-sided printings during a print job, you cannot configure 1-sided printing on a chapter basis.
[Print Pages] is not available in [Print Target], when [Booklet Printing] and [Sheet for Insertion] are selected in [Print Style].
[Output Paper Orientation] is changed to match the settings in the following cases.
When [Print Style] is changed from [1-Sided Printing] or [2-Sided Printing] to [Booklet Printing]
When [Print Style] is changed from [Booklet Printing] to [1-Sided Printing] or [2-Sided Printing]
In the following case, even if [Print Next Chapter] is set to [Continuously], [From New Sheet of Paper] or [From Next Page] are automatically processed. In this case, the settings of [Print Next Chapter] remain unchanged ([Continuously].)
When [Output Size]/[Output Paper Orientation] vary depending on the chapter
When [Page Layout] varies depending on the chapter
When [Header/Footer Settings] varies depending on the chapter
When a tab sheet/inserted sheet is set in [Sheet for Insertion]
When using 2-sided printing, [Print with 1-Sided Printing] varies depending on the chapter
When [Each Chapter] is set in [Staple]
If the settings that have been already configured for the document that is displayed in the Document Binder screen and the settings configured with the template cannot be applied at the same time, the settings of template will be given priority. If the settings that have been already configured can be applied at the same time, the original settings are retained as is.
When you select a non-Canon printer, the [Print Settings] pane only displays [Layout Settings] in the [Print Settings] tab. The following options are not shown in the panel.
[Use print settings of Document Binder]
[Print Settings]
[Paper Source Settings]
You cannot set [Auto] when configuring the color mode on a chapter basis.
When printing after setting the following settings on a chapter basis, you cannot change the settings of some items in the printer properties dialog box.

If [Auto] is selected in [Output Size] of the selected chapter, you cannot set [Output Paper Orientation].
Inserted sheets are displayed in the Preview Pane. However, you cannot select them. Selecting them is possible when printing an original on the cover/back cover.
Inserted sheets are not displayed in the Navigation Pane.
When specifying the color mode for each chapter while the color mode for the entire document is specified as [Auto], the color mode for the entire document is automatically changed to [Color].
The print preview of Document Binder does not reflect adjustment of the print area including margins specified with the printer properties. Therefore, if you change the print area with the printer properties, the print result may differ from the preview.
You can register up to 30 templates other than the templates registered while installation.
When [Booklet Printing] is selected for [Print Style], the following settings are not available.
[Binding Location]
[Gutter Settings]
[Hole punch]

Anything other than [1 on 1] in [Page Layout]
[Print Style] > [2-Sided Printing]
[Print Style] > [Booklet Printing]
[Staple]
[Hole punch]
[Sheet for Insertion]
[Fold]
If [Auto] is selected in [Output Size], you cannot set the following.
[Binding Location]
[Output Paper Orientation]
You cannot perform the following for a template that has been registered during installation.
Export
Delete (deleting is possible from the list in the [Templates] tab)
Rename
When you perform black and white printing, the color density of the image displayed in the preview may not be accurately reflected in the print results depending on the printer driver or device you use.
When you print a document in which transparent objects exist, it may be drawn with different color tones on some devices. When this happens, it may be solved using one of the following methods:
Create a binder document by specifying [Replace with Halftone] or [Replace with Image] for the pattern data process in Desktop Document Writer
Create a PDF document using Adobe Acrobat and import it in Desktop Browser
Print the document with a PS printer
When the following print settings are specified, you cannot set [Output Paper Orientation] on a chapter basis.
When [Auto] is set for the output paper size per chapter
When the output paper size of the entire document uses a combination of different size paper
Variable printing cannot be performed in the following cases.
When a database file is not in the connection destination
When there are no records that can be printed in the database file
When a fax driver that does not support variable printing is set as the printer
When only variable fields which do not have variable data configured exist

Other Cautions and Restrictions

Common

If you are using a document that contains even one page of which the paper size width or height exceeds 1200 mm (47 1/4 inch), the following will occur.
Document Binder can import the pages within 1200 mm (47 1/4 inch) only. Therefore, pages over 1200 mm (47 1/4 inch) cannot be displayed, converted, or edited with Document Binder, Annotation Editor, or Object Layout Editor.
If you import an image whose width or height exceeds 482.6 mm (19 inches), it is reduced to fit inside 482.6 mm (19 inches), with the aspect ratio retained.
If a paper size is specified in [Output Size], the image is reduced to fit the specified paper size.
If [Auto] is selected in [Output Size], the image is reduced to fit the paper size specified in [Reduced Image Paper Size].
When multiple output paper sizes are selected (for example, A4 and A3), the image is reduced to fit the larger paper size.
If information for the resolution is not included in the image, the image is converted to 96 dpi when reduced.
[Settings] > [System Settings] > [Common Settings] > [Import] > [Reduced Image Paper Size]
When you add a document with a page size width or height that exceeds 482.6 mm (19 inches) into a binder document from another application, it is reduced as follows:
A0/A1/A2 sizes: Reduced to A3 size
B1/B2/B3 sizes: Reduced to B4 size
Desktop V3.1.0 or earlier does not support binder documents with a paper size width or height that exceeds 482.6 mm (19 inches). If you want to handle such documents with Desktop V3.1.0 or earlier, you should reduce the page size in advance by using Canon Desktop Document Writer to convert to a binder document before importing, etc. Sizes are reduced with Desktop Document Writer as indicated below.
A0/A1/A2 sizes: Reduced to A3 size
B1/B2/B3 sizes: Reduced to B4 size

Regarding Importing

When you select a document in Windows Explorer and right-click it, if the [Print] menu is not displayed in the right-click menu, you cannot import the document into Document Binder. In this case, execute the print process to import the document by specifying "Canon Desktop Document Writer" as the printer in the print screen of the application that is used to create the document.
You cannot import documents with any of the following extensions into Document Binder.
.exe, .com, .dll, .ocx, .lnk, .sys, .drv, .avi, .wav, .lzh, .zip, .cab
When you drag and drop a document into Document Binder, the [Print] dialog box of the application used to create the document or the [Printing] dialog box may be displayed. When the [Print] dialog box is displayed, specify Desktop Document Writer as the output printer to perform printing.
Importing a binder document into Document Binder does not maintain the chapter organization and print settings.
You cannot import a binder document that is being used into Document Binder.
You cannot import a binder document from another application into Document Binder.
If you import a PDF package or PDF portfolio to Document Binder, only the cover page is imported.
If you add a PDF document to a binder document, the annotations/comments added to the PDF document are imported as annotations, but they cannot be edited with Document Binder. Annotation Editor must be used to edit them.
For a PDF with an attached file, only the main body is imported into Document Binder and the attached file(s) is not imported. If an attached file is not encrypted, it is saved as original document data in a binder document. However, when you export the data, the condition of the attached file is not supported. Encrypted attached files and files attached on the encrypted PDF documents will not be imported.
Signatures added to the PDF are invalidated when importing to Document Binder. The invalidated signature is recognized as an "unknown annotation" in Annotation Editor.
If it is a PDF created using the "Protected Envelope" function, only the envelope is imported into Document Binder.
If you select a PDF document that is configured with unsupported security settings, such as a PDF with security policies, you cannot import it into Document Binder.
You cannot import the following BMP images into Document Binder.
BMP images of V4/V5 format (16 and 32 colors) whose sizes (BITMAPV4/V5HEADER) are other than 40, 52, or 56 bytes
Small size images may not be reproduced correctly after compression. Also, images of 3 points or less in a PDF file are not imported to Document Binder.
Office documents can only be dragged and dropped to Document Binder to import if Microsoft Office 2003/2007/2010/2013 is installed in your computer.
When you use the following, to import a Microsoft Office 2007 formatted document, print by right-clicking the document icon in Explorer, selecting [Print], and then specifying Desktop Document Writer as the output printer.
The Microsoft Office compatibility pack for the Word/Excel/PowerPoint file formats
If the Excel document has configured macro(s) and the security level is set to "High", you may not be able to import it into Document Binder using the drag and drop operation.
In the following cases, you cannot import into Document Binder using the drag and drop operation.
Macros contained in the Excel document do not function properly
An Excel document without work sheet or graph sheet
An empty sheet of Excel
An Excel document containing a sheet that cannot be previewed even though the format settings (display format/border/pattern, etc) are specified in a certain area
You may not be able to import an Excel template file into Document Binder by dragging and dropping it. In this case, print the template file with an application (when printing, specify Desktop Document Writer in [Printer]).
When you import a PDF document or an image document into Document Binder from another application, the display may differ from the one that is displayed when the import is performed using the drag and drop operation.
A binder document of more than 2 GB is not supported.
When launching Document Binder with administrator permissions enabled in Windows Vista or later, you cannot drag and drop or use Desktop Document Writer to import documents into Document Binder. Administrator permissions are enabled in the following cases.
For Windows Vista/7:
Selecting the [Start] menu > [Canon iW] > [iW Desktop] > [iW Desktop Document Binder], or right-clicking an [iW Desktop Binder] shortcut on the desktop and selecting [Run as administrator].
Selecting the [Start] menu > [Canon iW] > [iW Desktop] > [iW Desktop Document Binder], or right-clicking an [iW Desktop Binder] shortcut on the desktop and selecting [Properties] > the [Compatibility] tab > [Run this program as an administrator], then clicking [OK].
For Windows 8/Windows 8.1:
Right-click the [iW Desktop Document Binder] tile on the [Start] screen > click [Run as administrator] from the application bar, or right-click the shortcut icon for [iW Desktop Binder] created on the desktop, and select [Run as administrator].
Right-click the shortcut icon for [iW Desktop Binder] created on the desktop, and select [Properties] > the [Compatibility] tab > [Run this program as an administrator] > click [OK].

Regarding Editing

You cannot convert a document into a binder document by dragging and dropping it onto the shortcut icon of Document Binder if the file path length is 254 or more characters and there is a space(s) in the path.
When a page to which signed digital stamps are attached is deleted with Document Binder, the stamps themselves are deleted (When other signed digital stamps are attached to the page, the content for edits after the sign is displayed).
During printing, if you configure the settings in the property screen of the printer and save the settings after printing, the settings of inserted sheets configured in Document Binder are discarded.

Regarding Printing

If the printer name registered in your computer is a printer name that contains a tab code, the operations are not guaranteed when you select this printer in Document Binder.
When you import a PDF document with a default image for which a 3D annotation is assigned into a binder document, the PDF document cannot be previewed or printed if the default image does not exist. The availability of the default image differs depending on the specification of the application with which the PDF document is created.
If the printer specified when the binder document was last saved does not exist in your environment, a confirmation message appears and the printer is changed to the default printer. In this case, the output results may differ from the configured settings.
If you use the following settings in Document Binder, you cannot change the print settings with the printer driver properties.
[Front Cover], [Back Cover], [Sheets], or [Tab Paper] is selected in [Sheet for Insertion].
[Print with 1-Sided Printing] or [Color Mode] is selected in [Chapter Settings].
When using Custom Paper Type, it must be registered in the printer selected in [Printer Name] in advance.
You can temporarily register a custom paper size depending on the printer you are using. In this case, if the paper size corresponding with the original size is not registered in the printer, you can temporarily register a custom paper size and print the document using the registered custom paper size, even when this check box is not selected.
When a page is divided with Document Binder, if a display of an annotation is divided and a part of the annotation extends beyond the page area, that part is not displayed in the preview. However, if you print the page, the preview differs from that printed because the part of the annotation extending beyond the page area is printed.
If you specify the booklet printing with Document Binder, the header/footer is printed within the original page range specified by Layout Settings. Therefore, depending on the layout settings, images or characters of the original may overlap with the header/footer.
The print location of the header/footer may overlap with margins and the header/footer may disappear, depending on the paper being used. Before printing, use the print preview in the Preview Pane to make sure that the header/footer is displayed correctly. For information on adjusting the position of the header/footer, see the following.
In some applications, when you print a document using the printer output icon, the default printer specified by the OS may be used instead of the specified printer. To print a document associated with such an application, import the document into Document Binder or launch the associated application and then print the document.

Regarding Saving

The supported binder document size is up to 2 GB.
When exporting a binder document in the PDF format, you can reflect the configured layout settings in the PDF document; however, the configured print settings are lost.
When a PDF document with an attached file is imported to a binder document and then the binder document is exported, the status of the attached file is not guaranteed.
You cannot save a binder document when the length of the full path to the storage location is 260 characters or longer or when the length of the document name is 256 characters or longer.
When importing a PDF document with a signature into a binder document and then exporting it in the PDF format, the signature may not be recognized correctly when this PDF document is opened in another application.
