Clearing Jams
If a paper jam occurs, an alarm beep sound is generated and a paper jam location is indicated on the screen. Press
to display simple solutions. If it is difficult to understand the procedures on the display, see the following sections to clear jams. If a paper jam occurs in multiple locations at the same time, check all messages that are displayed. Carefully read the precautions in
Important Safety Instructions before you start clearing paper jams.

If paper jams repeatedly, try the following possible remedies.
If Paper Jams Repeatedly
Tap the paper stack on a flat surface to even the edges of the paper before loading it into the machine.
Check that the paper is appropriate for the machine.
Paper
Check that no jammed paper fragments remain in the machine.
If you are performing 2-sided printing with [Plain L] or [Plain L2] selected, try the following settings in this order.

Specify [Plain L2] if the paper type is set to [Plain L].

With <On>*1, set the paper type to [Plain L2].

*1 The print speed will be slower.

If you are performing 1-sided printing with [Plain L] or [Plain L2] selected, adjust the setting in <Plain L Adj. Mode>

*2 Depending on your environment or printing preferences, roughness of printed images may be noticeable. In this case, select <Off>.

If a paper jam occurs during printing on the back side of the paper that is already printed (manual 2-sided printing), select the [Print on the Other Side] check box in the [Paper Source] tab of the printer driver.
If you print a document with <Mixed Sizes> selected for the paper size, paper jams may occur when a difference in length between the actually loaded paper and the print data is 40 mm or more. Check whether the loaded paper is appropriate for the print data.

When removing the jammed paper, do not turn OFF the machine
Turning OFF the machine deletes the data that is being printed.
If paper tears
Remove all the paper fragments to prevent them from becoming jammed.
Do not forcibly remove the jammed paper from the machine
Forcibly removing the paper may damage parts. If you are not able to remove the paper, contact your local authorized Canon dealer or the Canon help line. When a Problem Cannot Be Solved

Paper Jams in the Multi-Purpose Tray
If there is paper loaded in the tray, remove it before proceeding to clear paper jams. If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not forcibly remove it from the machine, but follow the procedure for another location indicated by the message.

Gently pull out the paper.

Open and close the front cover.
When the front cover is opened and closed, the paper jam message disappears.

Close the tray.

Open the front cover while holding down the button.

Close the front cover.

When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the front cover is securely closed.
Paper Jams in the Paper Drawer
If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not forcibly remove it from the machine, but follow the procedure for another location indicated by the message.

Pull out the paper drawer until it stops, and remove it while lifting the front side.

Gently pull out the paper.
When the optional paper feeder is attached, gently pull out the paper in the same way.

Insert the paper drawer into the machine.
Insert the paper drawer at an angle, and then push it horizontally.

Open and close the front cover.
When the front cover is opened and closed, the paper jam message disappears.

When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the front cover is securely closed.
Paper Jams in the Output Tray, Sub-output Tray, or Duplex Unit
If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, use the following procedure.

Gently pull out the paper.

While holding down the button, gently pull out the duplex unit from the rear side of the machine until it stops.

Check whether paper is jammed in the duplex unit.
If only <Sub/output tray area> is displayed, proceed to step 4.

Hold the green knob of the duplex unit, and open the inner cover.

Gently pull out the paper.

Gently close the inner cover.
|

Check whether paper is jammed inside the sub-output tray.

Open the sub-output tray.
|

Gently pull out the paper.
|

Close the sub-output tray.

Close the duplex unit.
When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the duplex unit is securely closed.
Paper Jams inside the Front Cover
If the jammed paper cannot be removed easily, do not forcibly remove it from the machine, but follow the procedure for another location indicated by the message.

Open the front cover while holding down the button.

Remove the toner cartridge.

Hold the green knob and lift the transport guide.
Keep holding the transport guide until returning it to the original position in step 5.

Gently pull out the paper.
Pull out the paper flatly as much as possible to prevent unfixed toner from being dropped.

Gently return the transport guide back in place.

Install the toner cartridge.
Align the toner cartridge against the toner cartridge guide (
), and make sure to push the cartridge until it stops.

Close the front cover.
When the message is still displayed
Paper may be jammed in other locations. Check other locations, and remove jammed paper if any. If the message is still displayed, check whether the front cover is securely closed.
