Preparations for Direct Connection
Enable the Direct Connection function on the machine, and select the Direct Connection mode to use. If the machine is not connected to a network, you must check the network connection type settings in advance.
Direct Connection Modes
There are two modes for directly connecting a mobile device to the machine: Access Point Mode and Wi-Fi Direct. You cannot use Access Point Mode and Wi-Fi Direct at the same time.
Access Point Mode
In the Wi-Fi settings of the mobile device, select the SSID (network name) of the machine, and enter the network key (password) to connect the mobile device. Instead of manually configuring the Wi-Fi settings, you can scan the QR code displayed on the screen of the machine with a mobile device to connect.
You can directly connect up to five mobile devices at the same time.
* The default setting is for only one mobile device.
You can configure the settings to always allow a mobile device to directly connect to the machine.
* By default, you must use the control panel to put the machine into waiting state when you want to establish a direct connection.
Wi-Fi Direct
In the Wi-Fi Direct settings of the mobile device, select the device name of the machine to connect. You can also connect by selecting a mobile device on the control panel of the machine.
Only one mobile device can be directly connected to the machine at any one time.
You must use the control panel to put the machine into waiting state when you want to establish a direct connection.
This mode is not available when connecting the machine to a wireless LAN (including a sub line).
Checking the Network Connection Type of the Machine
If the machine is not connected to a network (wired or wireless LAN), use the control panel to check that the network connection mode is set to wired LAN (including a sub line).
If the machine is connected to a network, you do not have to check this.
Administrator or NetworkAdmin privileges are required to check the network connection type settings.
1
Log in to the machine as an administrator.

If the connection type is set to wired LAN, you can establish a direct connection even if the machine is not connected to a network.
When the Connection Type Is Set to [Wireless LAN] or [Wired LAN + Wireless LAN]
When Using Access Point Mode
When the machine is not connected to a wireless LAN, a direct connection cannot be established. Change the setting to [Wired LAN] or [Wired LAN + Wired LAN], or connect the machine to a wireless LAN.

Configure the Direct Connection function, as needed.
To Change the Time until the Connection Is Terminated Automatically
In [Time Until Direct Connection Session Is Terminated], enter the time period of the direct connection until it is terminated. When multiple mobile devices are connected, they will be disconnected after the time period elapses since the last started connection.
* If you do not want the connection to be terminated automatically, set this to "0 minutes."
To Change the IP Address for Connection
In [IP Address for Direct Connection], enter any IP address.
Select the Direct Connection mode.
In [Direct Connection Type], select Access Point Mode or Wi-Fi Direct.
7
Configure the settings according to the Direct Connection mode.
When Access Point Mode Is Selected in Step
6By default, the SSID and network key of the machine are automatically assigned a random character string each time direct connection is performed.
Configure the settings to use a separate SSID and network key for each login user, or manually set a fixed SSID and network key, as needed.
When connecting multiple mobile devices at the same time, you must specify a fixed SSID and network key.
You cannot set a fixed SSID and network key when the settings are configured to use a separate SSID and network key for each login user.
To Use a Separate SSID and Network Key for Each Login User
In [Access Point Mode Settings], select the [Use Personal SSID and Network Key] checkbox.
To display the login name as the user name for print jobs when connected with Direct Connection, in [Display User Name for Print Jobs], select the [Use Login Name as User Name for Print Jobs] checkbox.
When the [Use Personal SSID and Network Key] checkbox is selected, only one mobile device can be directly connected to the machine at any one time.
To Specify the SSID and Network Key (When Connecting Multiple Mobile Devices at the Same Time)
In [Access Point Mode Settings], select the [Specify SSID to Use] and [Specify Network Key to Use] checkboxes, and enter an SSID and network key using single-byte alphanumeric characters.
To Allow Mobile Devices to Always Connect to the Machine
By default, you must use the control panel to put the machine into waiting state when you want to establish a direct connection.
To allow mobile devices to always connect to the machine, in [Access Point Mode Settings], specify the SSID and network key, and select the [Always Keep Enabled If SSID/Network Key Is Specified] checkbox in [Keep Connection Enabled].
When Wi-Fi Direct Is Selected in Step
6In [Device Name for Wi-Fi Direct], enter a name to identify the machine, using single-byte alphanumeric characters.
* "-XY_Canon10" (where XY are random letters) is added automatically to the device name for Wi-Fi Direct. However, this is not added when a string of 22 or more characters is specified.
